Fusion Art Show

"We want to celebrate artistic diversity."

The 2022 graduating year for the Bachelor of Design program requested that we create cohesive branding and promotional materials for an end-of-the-year graduation show. They wanted to visually express the various mediums each student use from traditional to digital art. This project’s solution is brought to you by Aidan Marsh and myself.

We decided that we wanted to approach the project by symbolizing the mixture of different mediums. The logo shows CMYK and RBG colours mixing. This represents the digital media and print media forming together. We also decided it would be best to use collage-based elements for the posters and seamless Instagram feed that I designed. Aidan worked on the 3D modelling portion of the project, and the motion graphics. Throughout the whole process, we both looked for critique from the client, ourselves, and our peers to ensure we would deliver something truly unique.

Overview

The first poster shows a person with a television head with lips in the screen. This represents the amount of time students have spent virtually attending classes though the pandemic. The lips were removed in the final edition to reduce any potential thoughts of sexual imagery to consumers. The “hello my name is” sticker on the torso of the first poster represents how graduating students are starting a new chapter to a new life after graduating.

The second poster shows a man looking to the right with an abstracted face achieved by selecting similar areas of shadows of the subject. This decision is made to abstract the figure and continue the original intent of the posters to keep them barely recognizable. The base of the subject shows letters scribbled across a spray painted wall that stats “no excuses” to show the attention to discipline to tight deadlines that all students who complete the program work through.

The last composition shows a classic surrealist approach to collaging. The subjects face is covered by a space mask with a keyhole or archway opening in the middle. This represents unlocking unlimited possibilities and views the students have when creating. The stickers further the space motif by mimicking planets in a traditional manor while achieving a solution by using found elements. Finally, the text found in the top left of these images further the idea of abstraction found in each piece by placing them in an unorthodox fashion. This was inspired by the viewfinder on a camera. This also creates a loose boarder around the compositions,

The motion graphics in the branding play on the duality of the branding, two are cleaner and lend themselves more to the “screen” aspect of the branding, while the other lends itself more to the collage and traditional element of the branding, while both retaining similar composition and movement

Social Media

We agreed to use reoccurring elements found in the posters to create cohesion between the two design. (ex. tape, rips, paper textures) However, we also agreed to add elements like Polaroids and cut out letters to push the envelope further.

From the beginning we knew we wanted to create a collage inspired seamless Instagram feed. Each poster would be used as a post amongst templates for each graduating student.Six customizable posts were made to keep the feed of the social media of choice exciting and fresh with each post.

While working through the process we decided it would be interesting to tie in all the posts together with the logo when looking at the feed as a whole to further push the branding overall.
